Difficult Times for Puget Sound Ports

Founded in 1911, the Port of Seattle owns and operates Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the seaport. Seaport trade contributes to the creation of nearly 200,000 jobs across the state. The maritime industry alone represents a $30 billion industry for Washington.

After decades of competition, the ports of Seattle and Tacoma came together last August and formed the Northwest Seaport Alliance to strengthen the Puget Sound gateway and create greater economic opportunities. In its most recent economic data, the Alliance reports generating more than $4.3 billion in activity and $379 million in state and local taxes.

Despite its strong economic impact, these are challenging times for our Puget Sound ports, which face intense competition from ports to the south and the north, as well as the impact of massive consolidation in the shipping industry.

Increasingly, the Port of Seattle is being asked to create more space for larger ships, manage inland freight mobility challenges and even navigate high-profile "kayaktivists" weighing in on activity within the Port.

Join us as we kick-off our spring Focus Forward series where we will examine the current state of our Port, explore the merger of the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle and discuss future challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our trade-dependent economy.

March panelists include: Seattle Port Commissioner Stephanie Bowman, John Wolfe, CEO of the Seattle/Tacoma port alliance, and Eric Schinfeld of the Washington Council on International Trade.
